Captivating Design
Spanish Colonial Revival architecture with Moroccan influences and unexpected custom furnishings from celebrity designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard create a modern take on seaside Santa Barbara.
Featuring over 1 million tiles—many hand painted and flattened in Morocco—Hotel Californian’s design is as dazzling as the natural beauty of the American Riviera, in an entirely unexpected way.
Your Own Zone
Hotel Californian brings the Funk Zone bar scene into your guestroom. Generously-sized bottles of local spirits and small-batch mixers will energize your evening, or help you recover from the night before. Local partners ensure only the finest spirits, while tonics & snacks mixed especially for recovery means you won’t miss a beat of vacation time.
Crossroads of Culture
Named after the Moorish Troubadours of medieval Spain, our Room & Suite names honor the original iconoclasts of the Mediterranean.
Almeria, Sevilla, Granada, and Cordova honor the royal cities of Moorish controlled Medieval Spain, while Sestina pays homage to the song style of these illustrious bards. Tangerinn—a beat poet expat enclave—memorializes the famous bar in Tangier where authors Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac found inspiration from these epic poets, and William Burroughs wrote his famous novel Naked Lunch in the infamous Room #9.
Turndown Service
That Blurs Past and Present
As you return to the hotel each night, you’ll find your room perfectly prepared for slumber by a Hotel Californian djinn, or genie. Though their whereabouts may be mysterious, we assure these creatures can do no harm, and are only there to lend a helping hand.
You may notice a special offering left behind--short poems or experiences from legendary ex-pats, mysterious and inspiring quotations, or recommendations from local iconoclasts will keep each evening unpredictable.
Hollywood North
In 1925,
Hotel Californian first opened as a gateway to the beach and downtown Santa Barbara. Only eleven days later, the historic earthquake and fire of 1925 rocked this city, and the hotel, to its core. Following the destruction, Santa Barbara was rebuilt in a way only a Hollywood dreamer could imagine—a thoughtfully designed playground meant to capture the allure of an imagined California. Architects of Santa Barbara’s then new Spanish Revival style aimed to create a feeling of affluence and exoticism entirely unique to the town.
Hotel Californian finds itself at “La Entrada,” or the entrance, to the burgeoning food & wine centric Funk Zone, and steps away from the iconic beachfront and pier—the perfect location to explore the best of what Santa Barbara has to offer, all accessible by foot.
